The O's had a chance to take sole possession of first in the East but fell to New York in a 13-3 drubbing on Sunday afternoon.
Zach Britton lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and five walks while fanning two. Britton (5-2) was looking for his fourth straight "W" but never found a rhythm; he walked in two runs in the fourth inning before being pulled for Jake Arrieta. The bullpen didn't fare much better, as four relievers combined to allow eight runs on nine hits and three free passes.
The O's scored all three runs in the fourth inning, cutting the Yankees lead to two runs, but the Birds managed just four hits all game and never came any closer.
It was revealed after the game that Nick Markakis would get surgery on his broken thumb suffered in Saturday night's contest. Nate McLouth batted lead-off while Chris Davis manned right field. Markakis hopes to return in four weeks...
The O's are off Monday before hosting Tampa By for three games starting Tuesday night. Miguel Gonzalez is slated to take the hill.
